One of the greatest things any Christian can do is be a witness. We have so many opportunities in everyday life to preach the gospel and I feel like the majority of us don't take nearly enough advantages of the opportunities that are placed before us. I was walking to volleyball last night along the seafront and came across a guy sat alone on a bench, I felt so clearly moved to go over and spark up a conversation with the hope that it would somehow lead to an opening to tell him about the gospel. However like the typical Brit that I am, I ignored it and carried on walking, too afraid of social rejection or starting a conversation with a stranger. I considered going over for a moment, and then heard him talking on the phone and was thankful of an excuse not to go over. Yet since then I haven't been able to stop thinking 'what if?', what if I hadn't carried on walking? How much of an impact would that conversation have had on his life?
Coming out of yesterday's experience I've realised that in everything we do, there's an opportunity to show the gospel - be it through actions, words, emotions or whatever. And that actually, we don't pay attention to how important it is that we follow those opportunities. We live our lives in a nice comfy, christian bubble, only really being a witness when spurred on by friends or when it can help us in some way, and that needs to change.
In this coming season, I'm going to try my best to take advantage of every opportunity that gets given to me and see how many lives God can impact through His work in me. Even if we only acted on one opportunity a week, that's 52 people in a year. If two people do that, that's 104 people impacted by God in just one year, by just two people. It's such a simple thing to do, but it's so effective!
Through being a Christian, we are choosing to be like Jesus. As it says in John 1v8 - He came to bear witness about the light. So let's go out and start being like Jesus now.
